Vic: Trail bike rider dies in crash

MELBOURNE, Aug 27 AAP - A man died when he and his machine plunged down and embankment
and over a cliff in the highlands east of Melbourne yesterday.

Police said the man, 59, of Tyabb, was with a group of four riders, including his son,
on the Toomstar Track at Toombon, north of Walhalla in central Gippsland, when the accident
happened about 2.30pm (AEST).

He lost control of the Yamaha motorcycle on a steep decline on the dirt track.

It crashed 100 metres down an embankment, a further 30 metres down a cliff and into a creek.

The man was found by the group a short time after he failed to arrive at the bottom of the track.

A paramedic was winched in to treat the man but he died at the scene.

It is unclear if he died of injuries from the fall or drowned in the creek.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The death was not on a public road and is not included in the road toll.
